I fear we may be getting a bit too profound for this “nothing profound allowed” thread, however I wíll follow suit; Pen can move us to another thread if we are upsetting her apple cart.
[quote]
I like the thread title....................... You are evil if you fail to accomplish this task, as I see these things naturally.
The first profundity that must be addressed is the definition of evil. One onlíne dictionary gives 10 meanings, 5 adjective meanings, 4 nouns, and 1 adverbial meaning. I dare say that this is about the smallest number of definitions that we would find if we asked 100 people for their definitions.
[quote]In my case, there are energies within me that crave expression. The idea is to find appropriate ways to service all that I am.
We all have energies, drives, needs, instincts within us that crave expression. It has been said that God made us co-creators by sharing with us the ability to think, plan, and project these qualities onto reality. Perhaps that also includes the drive to make these things in our own image, thus the frustration when things go awry.
[quote]The idea is to find appropriate ways to service all that I am.
So I agree one meaning and measure of evil may be “inappropriateness”.
Our inability to find a common description for evil is a symptom of what causes evil; free wíll.
Neither God nor evolution could have created evil. In the one case God would have had no prior restraints on creation, thus good was determined solely by his wíll.
In the other case evolution is driven only by the need to survive, the measure of success and thus the meaning of good is surviving to produce viable offspring.
Only free wíll, self-determination, right to choose can allow for evil. Whatever degree of variance from the “perfect” course constitutes evil, is a product of our free wíll to decide, and is made even more difficult by the fact that free wíll even makes it impossible to have even a semblance of agreement as to what the perfect course is.
Very few people do evil by conscious choice, according to their own definitions, but their own free choice to define evil places most of what they do into the good, “or at least the acceptable”, column; A process known as self-justification. Still they do make a choice between possible actions that can be harmful or helpful to others. They can be doing harm to others for their own gain, and justifying it on the fact that the gain far outweighs the inconvience to others.
Let me though make one defining comment as to what evil is not: The actions of an animal guided only by instinct and circumstance, no matter how violent, cannot be evil, because instinct is not free-wíll. Free wíll is the parent of good and bad, sacred and profane, Holy and Evil: without free wíll there is no knowledge of either, or of the difference between them and no opportunity to choose.

If we are becoming too profound (which I am sure we are) feel free to move this discussion to its own thread.
