Yes, they have become a popular whipping boy in the media Pen. That's why. Look at the articles in your link. Most of the ones about churches are pure speculation. The core of this story is about a handful of churches in Israel that have been suffering from arson/terrorist attacks which they desperately want solved. For obvious reasons. Most of those stories are coming at this from the wrong angle, then blowing it completely out of proportion. This is my complaint here. Making mountains out of molehills that aren't even there.

This particular issue applies to a lot more topics than this one, so it's not a one off. Why are they doing this? They certainly can't plead slow news days in these times, can they? Is there a story which somebody wants to distract everybody from? I don't know the answers to these questions. I've merely spotted the pattern. But I'm convinced that it ties directly to what you found about the satellites. Somebody may have found a way to manipulate this story (spying) too. This I can't say. All I know is that there's something huge taking place, and a lot of media people have become complicity by happily providing a lot of the smoke, as well as a large number of the mirrors. And I don't care for the practice one bit. They shouldn't be helping those who will wind up subjugating them before anybody else should they? So what are they getting out of all of this? For some strange reason, I tend to doubt that the answer is selling newspapers.
