Russia begins work on its lunar lander: Spacecraft could help create a permanent manned base on the moon in 2030

  • The four-legged, 20-ton spacecraft is designed to land two cosmonauts
  • It is also is hoping to launch a lunar probe in 2024 to scout out locations
  • Nation will begin building a human colony on the moon in 2030, it said 
  • The process will take around 10 years and require six space launches

Russian engineers have begun designing a lunar lander ahead of plans to create a permanent colony on the moon in 2030. 

The four-legged, 20-ton spacecraft is designed to land two cosmonauts on the moon with the help of Angara-5V rockets.

The nation is hoping to launch a lunar probe in 2024 to scout out colony locations, before landing humans on the moon within 14 years.
