WASHINGTON — The GOP chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Thursday he is satisfied with how the military responded to the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.Republicans are pressing ahead with multiple congressional investigations, but Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Calif., said the military did what it reasonably could during a chaotic night of two separate attacks on Sept. 11, 2012. The assault killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.“I think I’ve pretty well been satisfied that given where the troops were, how quickly the thing all happened and how quickly it dissipated, we probably couldn’t have done more than we did,” McKeon told reporters at a roundtable discussion. “Now, we’ve made changes since then. We’ve got more Marine fast teams that we built up security around the world.”

Republican senators on Friday put pressure on President Obama to confirm his whereabouts during the night of the Benghazi attack, after an ex-White House spokesman revived the debate by telling Fox News he was not in the Situation Room. The detail about the president's location the night of the attack is just one of many revelations that have, in a matter of days, kicked up the controversy to a level not seen since last year. After new emails were released raising questions about the White House response to the attack, a key panel on Friday subpoenaed Secretary of State John Kerry and House Speaker John Boehner announced a special investigative committee.

Fox News cut away from President Obama's press conference with German chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday because people weren't asking Obama questions about Benghazi.Obama's conference came just as House Republicans announced that they were forming a select committee to further investigate the 2012 attacks, but Fox News apparently grew frustrated that he was getting questions on the situation in Ukraine and the botched execution in Oklahoma. When a German reporter stood up, Fox News host Harris Faulkner told viewers that the network was cutting away, and that it would stay away unless someone asked about Benghazi.

Republicans are unlikely to learn anything useful from their investigation, since they're more interested in discrediting Obama.President Obama ordered the assassination of an American citizen without due process. He presided over mass surveillance on millions of Americans. And he illegally ordered U.S. troops to war in Libya without obtaining congressional authorization. An investigation into any of those acts could document serious lawbreaking. But lawbreaking in service of hawkish national-security policy doesn't interest Republicans. They demand sunlight only when they imagine it will prove Obama is a foreign-policy incompetent whose weakness costs American lives—hence the new House select committee to investigate the Benghazi attack. Normally the GOP acts as though the White House is justified in covering up anything that involves CIA presence in a foreign country. This is the exception. "There is much to be learned still about what happened at Benghazi," says National Review, "and how to be better on guard against such events in the future." Are there any useful lessons to be learned that weren't covered in the independent accountability report on the attacks? If so, I doubt movement conservatives will learn them. Perhaps you've wondered why there were so many violent militia members in Benghazi just prior to the attack on the American consulate and CIA annex. The answer begins with the civil war in which the United States participated. Zack Beauchamp explains what happened next:

Whereas I don't know whether he did all those things or not..... I have noticed that tactic is his modus operandi..... I first noticed it when the Occupy Wall Street people were staging protests.... he attacked medical marijuana to distract attention away from the OCW crowd.....

He’s the man who helped bring you Sandra Fluke.Rep. Elijah Cummings is the Democrats’ top guy on the new Benghazi select committee, but fighting Republican-driven scandals is old hat to the pugnacious Maryland lawmaker.Cummings understands the twists and turns of the Benghazi controversy just as well as many Republicans. For three years, he has served as Rep. Darrell Issa’s chief sparring partner on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, one of the panels where the scandal first caught fire. The former prosecutor, who speaks in a booming baritone and is from a safe Baltimore-based seat, has earned a reputation among Democrats for besting Issa on a number of Obama administration controversies ranging from Benghazi, to the Internal Revenue Service targeting of conservative groups, to Fast and Furious.

The Tea Party-backed “revolutionary patriots” who call themselves “Operation American Spring” (OAS) have continued their attempt to overthrow the federal government. When the group first announced itself, it claimed that “10 million to 30 million American patriots” would join them on May 16, 2014 for a protest patterned in equal parts on the Occupy movement and the “Arab Spring” protests. At the height of Operation “Beginning Of Tyranny Housecleaning,” OAS fell far short of its expected attendance, with charitable estimates placing the number of attendees at approximately 450. Since that time, a handful of protestors have remained, and every day they stand in front of the White House and yell at it.The group published a letter today asking other protest movements to “[t]ake advantage of the powerful vessel OAS has established on the D.C. Mall to get your worthy message in front of America and the lawless occupiers of leadership.” A video of this “power vessel” can be found below. In it, eight men, three women, and one dog can be seen marching, military style, in front of the White House. When they stop, they turn toward it and yell “Remember! Benghazi!” repeatedly. At the 1:33 mark, a D.C. police officer approaches the group’s leader.
