Think of how some people would be willing to bow to their new, "benevolent" overlord. Von Braun was a brilliant man who, having seen the worst of war, was firmly committed to peaceful exploration. It wasn't so much that he opposed weapons in space, but the weaponization of space. There is a difference, and he understood what kind of people would, I believe a better word for what he was referring to is militarize space. He wanted to see nothing more of European style empires. It's what made him such a good American, back when there was still meaning to be an American. It's only been a few years, but it seems like forever. Obama has done enough harm to this nation that a firing squad is too good for him. The people have told him to stop, and still he persists. He has paved the way for an antichrist type individual. No wonder I've had those thoughts. Tim

Has anybody heard whether or not they could answer for that shortfall of actual cash in their banks? Last piece I read said they were trillions beyond the amount of our national debt. That figures. A huge chunk of the money owed to us are bad loans to Europe from WWII rebuilding. Their excuse now is that we bombed them, but ........... who started that war, and who asked for help? We had a Japanese problem to deal with. Their parents and grandparents were happy .......... but this generation never knew Nazi rule. Without our rampant consumerism, will anybody else carry the ball? A rarely reported fact is that China is nearly broke too. Smoke and mirrors don't cut it when you have to come up with actual cash. I remember hearing the old timers say they would find a way to take this country out years ago. Tim

Worst case scenario would be a huge one nudged into the ocean. I wonder how large an object a drive system like I'm talking about could move? Vaporize enough sea water, and the weather system would make environmentalists forget all about global warming. I tend to doubt that very many people realize the possibilities here. And there are plenty of rich folks who are sick enough puppies to run with something like this. Just use the way some treat their employees as a guide, then take a guess. How many are that twisted?

We have yet to discover any signs of an extraterrestrial civilization — a prospect that could quite literally change overnight. Should that happen, our sense of ourselves and our place in the cosmos would forever be shaken. It could even change the course of human history. Or would it?Top image: Josh Kao; more about this artist here.Last week, SETI's Seth Shostak made the claim that we'll detect an alien civilization by 2040. Personally, I don't believe this will happen (for reasons I can elucidate in a future post — but the Fermi Paradox is definitely a factor, as is the problem of receiving coherent radio signals across stellar distances). But it got me wondering: What, if anything, would change in the trajectory of a civilization's development if it had definitive proof that intelligent extraterrestrials (ETIs) were real?Finding a World Much Like Our OwnAs I thought about this, I assumed a scenario with three basic elements.

When I heard what this guy had to say before, I had no reason to consider the possibility. Well, things have changed. Tim
