Australian researchers transplant ‘dead’ hearts into living patients in biggest breakthrough in a decade
Australian researchers have announced the biggest breakthrough in heart transplant science in a decade, set to revolutionise the surgery around the world and save 30 per cent more lives. For the first time, a patient has received a successful transplant from a heart that has stopped beating for 20 minutes before it was resuscitated and implanted.
The heart was brought back to life and placed on a machine before being injected with a ground-breaking preservation solution developed by the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and St Vincent's Hospital.
