Mysterious Dark Watchers -
One Of America's Greatest Ancient Riddles

Who or what the Dark Watchers are, no one knows. Where these elusive beings came from and where they go remains a mystery. They leave without a footprint.

They are mentioned in a number of ancient legends and are well-known in several US states.

The Dark Watchers are apparently giant human like phantoms that are only seen at twilight, standing silhouetted against the night sky along the ridges and peaks of the mountain range. When spotted, the beings are usually seen staring off into the open air of the mountains seemingly at nothing in particular before vanishing into thin air occasionally right before the spectators eyes.

The Dark Watchers

Dark+Watchers.jpg

The Dark Watchers sounds like the title of some spirit-fueled horror movie. In reality, they are shadowy spirits seen on the Santa Lucia Mountains in California.

Their exact origins are unknown. According to legend, the Chumash Indians were among the first to witness their presence and supposedly carried them in their legends and drew them on cave walls (all of which is up for debate). However, in 1937, John Steinbeck described them in his short story "Flight" and poet Robinson Jeffers mentioned the Dark Watchers in his poem "Such Counsels You Gave to Me". It's uncertain if either had a personal encounter with the phantom shadows or only heard about the tale. Their legend has been circulating for years but what are they?

These spirits are described as being large in size, but human in shape. Some have reported seeing them in robes and hats and as their name suggest, they are pitch-black in color. Some believe they are only a form of shadow people, but don't worry if you happen to see them. The Dark Watchers are not known to be violent in nature.

Dark Watchers

From about Avila Beach, through San Luis Obispo, and all the way up to Monterey, runs the Santa Lucia Mountains. Lurking within these mountains are the strange and mystifying Dark Watchers. The Dark Watchers, as they have come to be known, are apparently giant human like phantoms that are only seen at twilight, standing silhouetted against the night sky along the ridges and peaks of the mountain range. When spotted, the beings are usually seen staring off into the open air of the mountains seemingly at nothing in particular before vanishing into thin air occasionally right before the spectators eyes.

Who or what the Watchers are, no one knows. Where they came from or why they are there, again lost in speculation. And what they are looking for or watching is beyond anyone's current comprehension.

The Chumash Indians first spoke of them in legends and their cave painters drew them in their colorful wall drawings. Later legendary author John Steinbeck described them in his short story, "Flight":

  • "Pepe looked up to the top of the next dry withered ridge. He saw a dark form against the sky, a man's figure standing on top of a rock, and he glanced away quickly not to appear curious. When a moment later he looked up again, the figure was gone."

Exploring American Monsters: California

Humans have lived in California for at least 15,000 years. In 1848, The United States acquired the area that would one day become the state of California for $15,000,000 after signing the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. California, famous for Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, and earthquakes, is the most populated state in the union, and the third largest after Alaska and Texas. Outside the large cities (16.37 million people in the greater Los Angeles area) lie great expanses of desert, mountains (including Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park where Capt. James Kirk battled the Gorn in Star Trek), and forests. Despite the number of people, there’s plenty of room in California for monsters.

As with the other pieces of this series, I’m leaving out the most famous monsters (in this case a naughty girl named Patty from Bluff Creek, California), and am instead focusing on the lesser-known monsters, like the Dark Watchers.

Dark Watchers

The coastal Santa Lucia Mountains run for 105 miles from Monterey County to San Luis Obispo County. The western slopes of the mountains are covered with Ponderosa Pine, Santa Lucia Fir, and Coastal Redwood. The mountains are also home to the Dark Watchers.

The first peoples to speak of the Dark Watchers were the Chumash Indians, who once lived in the 200-mile stretch between Malibu, California, and Paso Robles. When European settlers first came to the region, they too saw these giant human silhouettes that stand on ridges, and seem to stare across the mountains. When watched themselves, the Dark Watchers fade from sight.

Legend his it these humanoid creatures rarely appear to anyone who is carrying a gun, or is dressed in weatherproof clothing, only revealing themselves to people who wander the mountains in more old fashioned garb.

Nobel Prize-winning author and California native John Steinbeck wrote about the Dark Watchers in his short story, “Flight,” as did poet Robinson Jeffers in his poem “Such Counsels You Gave to Me.”

Although people have seen the Dark Watchers looking across the Santa Lucia Mountains for hundreds of years, when approached these watchers vanish, leaving nothing behind, not even a footprint.

The Dark Watchers

Excerpt from comments:

This sounds eerily familiar to an experience a friend of mine had.

She grew up in Napa Valley, CA, where apparently, there was a high volume of paranormal activity related to the land.

One night, Nancy and friends, drove up to a secluded area encircled by mountains and next to deep canyon.

The road was one direction in and out.

Their intention was to party and look up at the stars.

At some point, someone drew attention to the fact that they were surrounded. Nancy described tall beings about 15 feet in ht. wearing hooded long black capes over their faces.

Nancy said there was about twenty of them with their heads bent looking down at the car. However, you could not see their faces.

She said they were so scared they couldn't get out of their fast enough.
